Cogito ergo sum.
I think therefore I am.
Amo ergo semper eram.
I love therefore I will always be.
My job as a Social Worker

I am a psychiatric social worker for the state of New York under the Office of Mental Health, working for South Beach Psychiatric Center at the Baltic Street Center, a community mental health center for adults in Brooklyn, NY. No, sorry, not the Miami Beach South Beach ... but Brooklyn is way cool.

Besides doing therapy with the adult mentally ill, I also teach MS Word, Excel, and Access to clients interested in returning to (or first entering) the world of work in our Computer Skills Center. I've also trained staff and hospital administration in computer use.

I also am Education Coordinator here, and have supervised BSW and MSW social work students in field placements from Long Island University, York College, College of Staten Island, Columbia University, New York University (NYU), and Hunter College (CUNY) Schools of Social Work. I also run a seminar for students of all disciplines in our placement, which includes art therapy and music therapy students, both Bachelors and Masters levels.

My work is more than my job

I volunteer with the American Red Cross in their Disaster Mental Health Service, offering mental health services to victims of fire, flood, and other disasters. Also, under the auspices of OMH again, some of my co-workers and I volunteer in the CIRT - the Critical Incident Response Team. It’s terrific work, and important; I’m glad to have had experience with both teams under my belt before the events of 9/11/01.

I also volunteer as a Community Member of the Public Safety Committee of Brooklyn’s Community Board 6, as well as of their Human Service/Homelessness Advisory Committee.

My life is more than my work

For one thing, I love music: the “more than my job” and “more than my work” titles on this page are from a song by Charlie King, a 1980’s folk singer. Though a child of the rock and roll era, I’ve begun a segue into jazz, though I’ve tons more to discover. I can hardly believe I lived on the same planet at the same time as Ella Fitzgerald, and never heard her until after she was gone.I also love modern dance and art, especially painting, and am not-quite-utterly-ignorant about art history; fortunate, since my partner of the past quarter-century (really!) and counting is a painter.

I follow politics from the national to the global to the local levels, though issues politics more than electoral. I enjoy words and wordplay; for example, I receive in my email every weekday , for example. (The word on this page will also change weekdaily). I’m also a life-long science fiction reader, and this has segued into lots of hard science reading as well; My two favorite books ever are Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison (not the H.G. Wells sci-fi novel) and Gödel, Escher, Bach (a science book, trust me) by Douglas Hofstadter. This serves me well as a part-time computer nerd, with some minor programming practice.

What else is here?
The text on the left takes you to other pages on this site. I have a page that directs you to the websites of groups that I am or have been a member of, or have otherwise worked with. Another page has other useful social work links. And there is my contact page as well. Don’t forget to sign the guest book! You are the 19391 person to visit this page.

Nota bene:

The designation “LCSW” stands for Licensed Clinical Social Worker, which went into effect through the New York State Education Department in September 2004. Until then, I was still a CSW, a Certified Social Worker. Moving up from a certification to a license is a major accomplishment for social workers in NYS.
